Rheumatoid Arthritis, known in Ayurveda as 'Amavata', is a chronic autoimmune condition causing severe joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
The Ayurvedic Perspective:
Ayurveda views Amavata as a condition caused by the accumulation of 'Ama' (toxic metabolic waste) and the aggravation of 'Vata' dosha. The Ama gets carried by Vata and lodges into the joints, causing inflammation.
The Treatment Protocol:
Modern medicine often relies on immunosuppressants and painkillers. Ayurveda aims to eradicate the root cause through a structured Panchkarma approach:
1. Langhana (Fasting): To digest the Ama.
2. Swedana (Fomentation): Dry heat therapies like Valuka Sweda (sand bolus) are used initially to melt the Ama.
3. Virechana: Medicated purgation to eliminate the digested Ama from the body.
4. Basti: Crucial for pacifying Vata. A specific protocol like 'Kshara Basti' or 'Vaitarana Basti' is often highly effective.
Post-detoxification, specific herbs like Guggulu, Ashwagandha, and Shallaki are prescribed to rebuild joint tissues and prevent recurrence.
